Hello, I'm a female freshman in high school and it's my first year doing XC and track. I started road racing in August. At first, I focused primarily on distance running. My 5k PR last fall was 20:08, and my 10k was 41:52. This spring on May 8, I ran a half marathon in 1:34:45. Immediately after my half marathon was over, I started outdoor track, but since I thought myself to be a distance runner, I blew off the speed training. Yesterday I had my first track qualifying meet, and my 3000m was 11:47 despite my lack of speed (going to provincials next weekend). I actually found that I really liked track, contrary to my previous belief.
I know that these aren't the best PRs. I want to get my 5k PR under 19 someday, my 10k PR under 40, my half marathon under 1:30, and my 3000m under 11, maybe even better. A competive running coach who saw potential in me once said during XC season that he'd expected me to beat his best runner (my age), but she is crazy fast and I didn't believe him. I don't train hard enough, but I want to change that. Now I want to chase her. I want to focus on 3-5k this summer for XC and such, in the fall run another half at the end of October, and then afterwards go back to 3k training for track. I run about 50-60k per week, which I know isn't that high for a half marathoner.
Can I balance both long distance and track happily, and how do I go about beating these PRs?
