For the past two years I've worked a seasonal job that has some kind of rough qualities. It's only 9 months per year, but I make more in those 9 months than I could with a different job in this area working a full 12 months. The work requires long hours, very early mornings, odd work weeks (my days off are in the middle of week), and no holidays during the season. The nice thing is then I have three months per year (the winter) to do whatever I want and can maintain a bit of a cashflow by going on unemployment or working some odd job.
Overall it's been great for me, but my running has gone in the toilet due to the long hours, I've gained 15lbs, having a social life is difficult, and I'm chronically sleep-deprived. At the same time, I genuinely enjoy the work, am appreciated, and I love my coworkers. Comparing it to many of my old jobs is the difference of night and day.
I've been considering quitting this job and career entirely and going into teaching. I tutored in college, have been a camp counselor a few times, and have substitute taught some also, and even though it is stressful and frustrating at times, it just feels "right" for lack of a better word, like it's what I was put on this earth to do. It is my "life's work." Switching over to teaching, even in my state that pays teachers pretty well, would mean a significant cut in pay though, and probably not any more free time my first few years.
I guess I'm just interested in hearing from others who have made pretty significant or drastic career changes and how it worked out, trading money for wellness, etc.
