I just ran well at the Broad street run so I thought I would attempt to get a comped entry into the Philly RnR race. Below is my correspondence with the rock n roll elite athlete organizer. I think their standards are too high. Only 16 men in the entire country have run age graded half marathons of 88% or higher. There are many more than 16 open athletes that have attained the 88% performance at the half marathon distance. I think is is negatively discriminatory towards master's athletes. Am I wrong?
Brian,
I am sorry that you do not like my answer. I am happy to give you an entry into any one of our other events. I think if you actually take a look at the results over the years for the Philly event, you will see the quality of athletes that run there. The first master's runner there last year was 106th overall. I would disagree that we have a terrible approval rating by elite athletes, but you are welcome to your opinion. I also feel that we have been more than generous with the support that we give even sub-elite athletes. You have to agree that 1:11 as an open standard for 17 of our 20 events is much more accommodating than most other races and the master's standard is equal to this time on an age-graded basis.
Good luck moving forward.
Jennifer

88%???? There are only 16 men in the US that have run an age graded half marathons at 88% or better. That is a pretty steep qualifying standard. That's all the entries that the stingy competitor group is willing to spare? No wonder your organization has a terrible approval rating among elite athletes.

Working with the age graded calculator, you will need to run 1:08 or better, or 88%, to have a time equivalent to 1:06.

As a 40 year old, you would need to run 1:08 or better to have a time equivalent to a 1:06. We don't post specific standards for master's as it will change depending on age. Your 1:12:31 converted time calculates to a 1:10:31 age-graded time.

Did you see in the info i submitted below that I just ran 54:19 for 10 miles last week? I was master's champion at the Broad street run. That converts to a 1:12:31.1 half marathon. Can you tell me what your master's standards are?

Brian,
You just became a master's athlete 4 weeks ago. The half marathon time you provided is 3 years old and was run as a sub-masters. I look at age-graded times when evaluating applications. There is plenty of time between now and Philly. If you run a qualifying time before then, email me and I would be happy to reevaluate your application.

> Hi Brian,

> Thank you for your interest in the RNR Philly Half Marathon. Unfortunately your times do not meet the performance standards for an elite comp entry that we have set for our events and because this is one of our major races, you need to run at least sub 1:06 in order to be considered for an elite entry. You can find the standards for our other on our website
http://runrocknroll.competitor.com/elite-athlete-program
. Please review these standards and resubmit an application if you achieve a time that is below our performance requirements.
