Hi guys! I started experiencing ankle/foot pain about 6 weeks ago and it became intolerable about 3 weeks ago. I have been cross training on the elliptical the last few weeks alternating with a few runs to see where the pain is at. I got an MRI last week and today I got the results back and learned that I have a "grade II stress reaction" in my ankle and cannot run/bike/elliptical/do anything but swim for the next 2 weeks. I run in college at a small liberal arts school and have a PR of 20:27. I want to be sub-20 come XC in the Fall. My coach's training plan for the summer starts next Friday so I should only be missing a few days of his scheduled summer training. Obviously though, I won't be able to jump right back to where I was after 5 weeks off and only about 15 or so miles. I ran around 32 miles per week before this and hope to increase my weekly mileage to a max of 45-50 by August 15. I plan on aqua jogging these next 2 weeks to stay as fit as possible (if I can find a pool). Does anyone have any cross training recommendations? Also, when I come back, what mileage will I be able to start at? How slowly should I come back? The last few times I have run, the runs have been tolerable and relatively painless, but I have been informed that no pain does not necessarily equal healed. I want to heal completely to compete my best in the fall. Any tips would be much appreciated!
