Instead of running 26 miles and 385 yards, they were running 26 miles and 5 yards.
It's a good thing that didn't happen in the USA as there might be a class action lawsuit.

Dang. Then I'm not in that exclusive sub-5h club anymore. :-(
You don't expect that kind of a fail from the Brits. Let's see if the invalidated runners keep a stiff upper lip.
If this weekend's London marathon doesn't result in a WR, Bedford should go to Berlin, remeasure it and get the record back that way.
Will it affect anyone? Boston and sub-elite entries to other races will still accept an adjusted result and I doubt anybody qualified for IAAF/Olympic purposes anyway.
Lame invalidation. It was not the runners faults. Never correct your gross error by penalized people who paid you money in good faith.
UK athletics should adjust the times upwards. If they don't then they own every runner a full refund.
Not as crazy as you might think. It's been thought for some time that Boston is at least 150 yards, but the BAA refuses to allow it to be remeasured. Probably mostly because they don't want to disturb tradition. So, whatever.

We measured the Boston course in college - It was 403 yards short. Everyone in Boston knows it
Totally agree! Not the runner's fault! Somehow adjust! There should be a freakin class action suit unless they correct this- people in this sport making ridiculous money should be held responsible for details that people depend on!

Maybe because it doesn't matter? Boston doesn't count as an accepted marathon. Times run at Boston don't count as prs.
Boston is certified and needs to be remeasured every 5 or 10 years. Unless you believe they are conspiring to lie about it because they have such huge interest in making the course almost 1 minute faster.

Short of the tailwind years, everyone's going to count Boston as a PR.

Yeah, because it's not as though anything like that has ever happened in the USA.
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/chattanooga-marathon-flub-leaves-short-article-1.2561779https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_Marathon#1981Never has an impact on important records either:
The article states that it was 380 METERS short (about 415 yards) or 25 miles 1730 yards for the course.
crazy story. Can you imagine? You break 2:40 for the first time and it gets invalidated! What if you qualified for Fukuoka at that marathon? You'd be so upset.
I've changed my bumper sticker to 26.0
1981[edit]
Alberto Salazar's 2:08:13 was initially considered to be a world's best in the marathon, but the mark was later rescinded by The Athletics Congress, now known as USA Track & Field, when the course was measured to be short by approximately 150 meters.[13] Salazar remarked in 1985 that he would continue to believe that he ran a full marathon, since the lack of crowd control forced him to run wide during his turns.[14] He has also suggested that a change in how courses were measured after the 1981 race attributed to the discrepancy in the course length.[13][15]

It's a known fact that they - NYC Public authority maintenance crews resurfaced and then repainted all of the lines inside Central Park in the Spring of 1982, taking at least a couple hundred yards off the old course! Alberto ran the full length and full distance and his record stood properly.
They have wiped it from the uk power of 10 results. Nullifing lots of peoples pbs from history.
