The new Nike Streak, as were many of the runners in the field. They will be released later this year.

They must be good, the insoles didn't fall out.
He may have been wearing a prototype of the Vaporfly:
"Beginning in 2016, some of Nike’s athletes began wearing prototypes of the new shoes, the uppers disguised to make them look like existing Nike models. Not only did Kipchoge cruise to victory wearing a pair at the 2016 London Marathon, but all three medals in the men’s Olympic marathon, including Kipchoge’s gold, were won by athletes secretly wearing the shoe. Give back the medals. The shoes are and were illegal, and not in the spirit of the rules at the time. Yes, carbon fiber plates are used in track spikes, and also in road trainers and flat previously, but not to this extent.
Spira was forced from the market. This shoe, too, is illegal.
That said, Adidas still has both records. Suck on that, Nike.
I'm sure the winner's shoes could be tested, just like the winner is drug tested, but the rules were changed so that "springs" are no longer specifically listed. Thus, it would be hard to determine what is an illegal shoe.
On the otherhand, noone is going to test the shoes of the other 10,000+ people trying to run a BQ time. Thus, I think those who wear this shoe will have an advantage over others without it. This could cause next year's entry time for Boston to be faster than BQ-3:23.
I thought the shoes might be a gimmick, but I bought the Zoom Fly's (the $150 version) anyhow. I think they'll allow me to run my next marathon faster, because the bent carbon-fiber plate does appear to have a distinct mechanical advantage. When your toes press down, the plate pushes your heel off the ground. Seems like less energy is being lost in this process compared with traditional shoes.
Overall, I'd recommend just buying the shoes. They're a lot cheaper than other devices to help you run faster like an altitude tent.
Are some jive ass slippers!
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
