I used to subscribe to the notion that you had to swap out your old running shoes when they started to break down. I was always told that running in old broken down shoes would lead to injury.
I followed this philosophy through college, and had a bunch of lower leg injuries that derailed my training every year. I also noticed that every time I ran in newer shoes, the bottoms of my feet would get this incredibly painful burning sensation. This would often torment me for the last 3 or 4 miles of my runs.
Now as a post-grad runner I've been injury free for 3 years despite running more miles and training harder, and that burning sensation has vanished. The only change I made was that I stopped running in new shoes. I have 4 pairs of old trainers that I run in (same model I used in college) that all have over 900 miles on them.
What's your philosophy on shoes? Has anyone else had success with this approach or am I just weird?
