Winning time in 2003 was 26:49, so first 5K must have been 13:52 ... closed in 12:57 as everyone already knows.
Bekele would run 12:53 a week later, but only good enough for 3rd. Had a (slow) heat of the 5K between the two as well (13:38).
Also worth noting just 12 days after that WC 10K Geb ran a world-leading 26:29, just 7 seconds outside of his own WR at the time.
Bekele beat Geb 26:53 to 26:54 in Hengelo that year too, in June. 3 sub-27s that season for each of them, geez.
Looking up 2003 Worlds I noticed Gebre Gebremariam 6th in that 5K with a 12:58. I didn't realise how good his PRs were across the board ... 12:52, 26:52, 60:25, then 2:08:00 at NYC (also 2:08:14 the year he won ... and a 2:04:53 at the wind-aided 2011 Boston.
And to end my stat indulgence blitz I found it somewhat funny that the fastest guy over 5000 in 2003 was Saif Saaeed Shaheen (pretty sure he was still going by Stephen Cherono then) with a 12:48.
Pretty sure that race is somewhere on YouTube. Shaheen blows El G's doors off the last 200.
