Google "high school cross country injury rate." Read some studies.
Now Google the sport you want to compare against. Compare the numbers. You'll find tons of studies.
To compare apples to apples, look for studies with injury rate reported in terms of "athletic exposures."
You'll find distance running to be fairly high risk in terms of injuries. However, if you can find studies comparing the severity of the injuries, running obviously compares favorably against sports with player against player impacts (namely football).
