Has anybody worn/ heard anything about Newton shoes? There was a ton of hype about them a couple of years back and I haven't heard much sense. Are they good shoes, or were they just a fad? What makes them different from other shoes?

They were so cool they were banned
For a person with a mid/fore foot strike they are decent. I wore them for a while because I was having trouble with a lot of other brands. They are very durable and If you have a light stride you could get over 1k miles on them. I have since switched to the adidas supernova glide boost.
Personally, love them. I have an arthritic hip, and they have greatly alleviated the pain. They are my exclusive trainers.
They are made in an Asics factory...
Seriously.
I have heard good things about them.
I've wear tested them before. The support that a normal shoe has on the heel continues into the midfoot.
made by Asics , the interesting thing about newton is the price. Why these are so much more expensive is a corporate decision, and nothing to do with manufacturing cost.
The lugs are something. And the midfoot is something. And Asics are something. And if you are a something-striker then you will either love or hate Newtons.
In conclusion, all shoes are made of rubber, foam, and fabric, and if you're really picky about your shoes, you're probably a bitch.
I had not heard they were made by Asics. Does Asics now own them? I thought Reebok had provided some early stage funding? Certainly seems like they are on the down swing, but I\\\'m not sure if that\\\'s reality. My local running store stopped carrying them and now has Altra and Hoka instead.
They are NOT made by ASICS. Most shoe companies don't make shoes, they subcontract out the design and specs to factories that do make them. Nearly every factory group, or individual factory, produces for multiple brands. I know Newton, know the guys who source it and have been in factories that make them. While they have produced some of their shoes in a factory that also produces Asics (which is a good thing as a factory that produces Asics would be reputable and technically proficient in making great running shoes) they also produce some of their produce in other factories that don't make Asics. The "Reebok" involvement comes from Paul Fireman's (former owner of Reebok) multi-million dollar investment in the company. I've also run in Newton's but I don't think I'd pay retail for them, that's for sure.

I got a pair as a gift. I put about a hundred miles on them. The lugs are stupid. Put the shoes in a clothes drop box in the grocery store parking lot.
Love them. Train in the Gravity, race in the Distance for Half and longer, Tri Racer for 10K and shorter.
Retail is expensive as crap, but you can always find good deals on ebay and runningwarehouse.com.
Newton is on the same sphere at Tommie Copper apparel
Newtons are very much a personal preference. They do last a long time. The lugs can create a hot spot on the ball of foot until your feet adjust to the shoe. They feel "bouncy" and are a good tempo and interval shoe. The heel to toe drop is very low... nearly zero I would think, so that's a plus for me, but it doesn't work for everyone.
I'd suggest the Newton Distance or Distance S. Since the shoe promotes a forefoot strike, there isn't much difference between these shoes. I've heard good things about the Gravity, but I've never worn them.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
