Is it okay to take an iron supplement if my ferritin level is at 17. If it is how much should I be taking? For your reference I am a male high school runner.

17 is very low. Your performance is almost certainly significantly impaired.
How were the rest of your blood numbers?
If you don't have other numbers, and have been feeling poor in your running, I'd probably start with about a tablespoon of ferrous sulfate elixir mixed with orange juice each day. Don't consume within a couple hours of high calcium items, coffee, tea, wine, etc.
What the hell do you mean by etc? Do you get that that makes no sense in this context?
he means any diuretic like coffee, tea, wine, and any other alcohol...
17 is certainly low, especially for a male. You can do what that guy said with the ferrous sulfate and OJ, or if you're lazy like I always was, just buy both iron pills and vitamin C pills.
500mg vitamin C pill with the equivalent of 325mg ferrous sulfate twice daily will do the trick no problem. That regimen took me from 19 to 50+ within two or three months.
Perhaps ask the MD who ordered the ferritin blood test?
