At sh!tty schools they probably are.
For most colleges, these sports generate revenue or have the potential to generate revenue from ticket sales, TV, post-season competition in a bowl game or the NCAA basketball tournament.

This is a lie. Very few schools actually turn a profit on football or basketball, much less athletics.

"Higher Education" itself is, today, pretty much a money-wasting fraud, so colleges and university might as well be in the sports entertainment business.
If someone today wants to get educated, there are better, cheaper ways available to do so than "going to college."
