Frank Shorter, Bill Rodgers and Brian Sell were all "average" high school runners who went onto great success in the marathon. Olympic Gold for- Shorter, Multiple Boston and New York victories for Rodgers, and Olympic Team/ 2:10:47 credentials for Sell.
I'm not sure of exact HS prs, but I don't think any of them broke 4:20 for the mile or 9:30 for the 2 mile in high school. None of them were state champions or anything close as far as I can tell.
Obviously, the marathon and even the 10k offer the most fertile ground for guys with mediocre speed to improve post hs.
That said,Christian Soratos was a 4:23 1600 runner who is now a 3:55 miler and All-American.
In general, most late bloomers probably ran in non-competitive areas or schools and excelled once they were exposed to serious training and competition.
