It's usually very hot where we are at so the standard early season longer steady runs don't work that well. We are going to experiment with some morning workouts this year. My plan for the week will look something like the following
Mon: hill reps with 2 mile wu and cd
Tue: weights + 5 easy
Wed: time trial or tempo intervals 6-7 miles total with warm up and cd
Thu: am: 7-9 steady. Pm weights + drills
Fri: off or run on your own very easy
Sat: meet or long intervals 1000-1600 at a bit slower than 5k pace 6-8 miles total
Sun: off or easy up to 1 hour.
This will give most of our kids 35-45 miles. Big dogs may double a couple of times to push mileage toward mid 50s
You first.
Getting kids back into shape after a summer off requires some hard work! I alternate between long and short repeats. Maybe 10X200 one day, then 5X800 the next, then maybe 8X300, etc.
After the first two weeks, we ease back into some easier long runs one everyone's back in shape.
