It really depends on whether you have a strength or speed based runner. I always take average lap for 8 and average lap per 15/16/mile and average them. For instance, I had a 4:14/1:56 guy and figured he'd run 3:05. He ran 3:04. That's just one example; it works really well as a predictor.

t(1200) = 105 x (1200/800)^1.135 = 166.4 (2:46)
for 3:45 1500
t(1200) = 225 x (1200/1500)^1.135 = 2:54

In HS I was a 4:31/1:59 guy and I ran a 3:12 in the DMR 1200, so this is right on the nose.
