I wouldn't feel very hopeless--there are plenty of runners that have had running or non-running injuries and have returned even better than ever. Just today, I watched the Anna Rohrer video, where she suffered two fractures in her feet and was contained to a wheel chair for weeks and Ben Blankenship had invasive hip surgery and is now the fastest American in the 1500m so far this year.
Shit happens. Obviously you are pretty talented with your track PR's and in my opinion talent doesn't go away. Just work on getting 100 percent healthy if you aren't. Once you are, then start building up this summer. You have many months until championship XC meets--that is plenty of time. Just work on building back into mileage and not worrying about pace.
Personally, my freshman year of college was a disaster. A pretty highly touted prep runner at the time, I was looking forward to huge things, but one injury turned into three of four and I didn't any real consistent training and off of a couple weeks of running low-mileage and months of just cross training (biking and pool), I managed to get a couple PR's. That summer, I worked on getting healthy, stronger and more resistant to injury and that next year was filled with probably the most successful performances of my career.
It might feel hopeless right now, but one day soon, after forcing yourself to go for a run or do core or whatever, you will feel a spark and feel ignited to get back on top and fall back in love with the sport--it happened to me.
