I remember watching the race a few years ago, both Amy Hastings and Ritz broke down emotionally, honestly Hastings will probably make it, still dont know about Ritz tho he might start crying again.

Hastings caught up to the main pack near the end of the race and put in an unnecessarily dramatic surge to the lead. She was then dropped again. If she was patient she would've given herself a shot at beating Goucher. She ran a stupid race.
Ritz will make the team next year.
"trials"
"TRIALS"
This is a fairly important term in The Sport and it would be nice if people spelled it correctly. There've been far too many misspellings of it lately, and they're starting to bug me.
Misconjugations of "to run" and misspellings of "Van Cortlandt" have a similar effect.
"But it was just a typo!" Fine. Proof your work before posting, then. Please.
5th would be worse, you wouldn't even be an alternate.
What I don't like is when 3rd is injured and still goes to the Olympics and then DNF's or drops out of the race without a reasonable, courteous, cushion of time for the alternate to get there and get acclimated. Of course if they get injured 3 days before, that's one thing, but on the other, they should be in a taper and not getting injured 3 days before...etc.

I am a believer in giving the alternates a chance... but I am also a believer in temporal causality. You can't DNF and then warn people 2 months prior.
I wouldn't know myself, but I think my contemporary Tommy Nohilly has an informed opinion on the subject.

I believe Lisa Rainsberger is the foremost expert on the topic.
Had not seen the '84 Trials since the original showing but just finding that an 18 minute clip went up on youtube a couple of months ago (courtesy of JJM).
