We're the country with the most demand for consumer goods. The rest of the world will always need us to sell their products to. Our appetite for buying things is what drives the global economy.

Correct. And fortunately we have money from selling fracking oil to pay for all these things. You know, that technology that liberals hate.

I do hate it. If we need money, we can print it. The printing press doesn't destroy the environment like fracking does.

I must admit you have found The Solution. Let's now leave this dirty oil business to those vile American-killing Muslims in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.
Most of the economy trades on luxuries. It has to because the essentials are produced so easily that nearly everyone would be out of work otherwise.
This is the capitalist way of handling superabundance - instead of just distributing the essentials to everyone, they have to work producing useless non-essential things and fooling people into buying them to earn their keep. There is a kind of masochistic ethic to it. Everyone must suffer. Thus in a country that pays farmers not to grow food to shore up the price, many people complain bitterly when extra food is distributed to people who aren't busy producing useless luxuries like they are.
The people in developing countries often sacrifice their own essentials to feed our demand for luxuries. But if they would pull themselves up by their bootstraps, they could keep their essentials and make luxuries too. One day they can be just like us, working very hard for no reason. Then they will know they are good people. We work hard. We are good.
