I'm a high school junior and I'm pretty new to running. I started running Cross Country this fall after very limited training. I was always in decent shape because I was a very competitive soccer player until I got too many concussions, but hadn't done much activity going into preseason. During the season I dropped my 5k time from 20:40 to 17:55. I didn't get to go on any "easy" flatter courses becasue I had a conflict for the meet where everyone else on my team dropped a minute and a half off their PR's. I got injured at the end of XC and never got into great shape for indoor. I only got to run the mile once and that was a 5:02. Although I don't do outdoor track, I am still running on my own, and plan on training often over the summer (20-30 miles per week) and hope to be able to drop my 5k time to 17 minutes next fall. I am looking at a lot of schools and I'm not even close to choosing where I will apply, but I've been told by friends that if I'm at all interested in somewhere and they're D3 then I should contact the coach. Most of the DIII schools I'm looking at are top to above average programs at good academic schools for reference. Do you think I would be able to run at such programs? If so, how would I go about initiating contact with Coaches, I'm nervous and unsure about how I would go about that. Thanks to anyone who responds!
