Just heard a blurb on NPR's "All Things Considered" about people working to restore the legacy of Joe Paterno. People on the side of Paterno seem to lean on the fact that Paterno fulfilled his "legal" obligation to convey reports of Jerry Sandusky's child abuse to Penn State administrators. Conversely, opponents of Paterno claim that he failed to fulfill his "moral" obligation to act more aggressively to stop Sandusky.
Here is my take: Paterno was a devout Catholic. Considering the Catholic Church practically condoned child molestation for decades (perhaps even hundreds of years) by virtue of shuffling pedophile priests from one parish to the next rather than risk harming the Catholic brand, then Paterno probably thought that he had gone above-and-beyond his responsibility with regard to Sandusky. Paterno probably thought a reasonable solution to the problem was merely to move Sandusky to a different office on campus, but he went beyond the call of duty and actually informed the administration of Sandusky's priest-like habits.
In fact, Paterno acted with greater integrity than the Pope. I put it to you, Penn State Nation, put the bronze statue back!
