I think this is a great approach.
In general, I would recommend ignoring, or at least adding to, your teacher's advice. Doing a presentation about something only you find interesting will leave you without an audience and a less that satisfying experience.
When given the option choose a topic and presentation strategy that your audience will find interesting. In some cases, a person's own passion for a topic can make it engaging for others, but it can also be annoying. Getting people to see/understand common things in a new way as Lorenzo has suggested is often engaging as it challenges what the audience already thinks they know and that usually pulls them in.
