When he was playing soccer it's reasonable to assume he was doing 60 mpw in total. Now he and his coach are saying they're doing only 50? Why the reduction? It would make more sense to increase his mileage if anything.

I disagree with your assertion that it would make sense to change anything about his training. When you're enjoying the type of success he's having, why mess with the recipe at all?

This clown is having success?? That's news.... A 17yo has been. What a joke.
I guess they forgot to run that by you :)
"When he was playing soccer it's reasonable to assume he was doing 60 mpw"
This is NOT reasonable. The guys on his club team that don't do 40 mpw as the national 1600 champion might run 20 mpw at soccer practice because they can't play soccer without being in shape.
Don't you think Grant got to skip the conditioning parts of practice or do you think they made him carry their goalie during their three mile runs?
It would seem likely that Grant did his XC work while they were doing their conditioning work before or after they got together for the skill part.
40mpw + skill part = 50 mpw

Have you ever played any sort of team sports? Highly doubtful that they would allow him to skip the conditioning. It's a team sport, what precedent does that set for the rest of the team. I'm assuming that most kids nowadays are multisport athletes.

50 mpw is not that low. I know LR is primarily an LD community, but not all H.S. athletes achieve success by doing HM. The main thing is, why make any major changes if things are working. That's about the same mileage Ches, Kennedy, Rupp, Coe, Farah and many other greats ran in H.S. The Ritz and Hall model doesn't work for everyone. Also, not all mileage is equal.
