Running around the Alster is great. About half of it is dirt and there are always lots of people out running there, especially on the weekends. I think it is close to 4.5 miles around. Depending on where you are staying, you can add on by running along the river from the north part of the Alster. It goes on for quite some time, varying between dirt paths and sidewalk.
Another place I ran, by accident the first time, was Ohlsdorf Cemetery. It is the second largest cemetery in the world, and is unlike any other I have seen. It is massive but there are maps everywhere so you don't have to worry about getting lost. There are also lots of restrooms open to the public. After ending up there while trying to find a different park, I asked my brother, who lives in Hamburg, and his German girlfriend if it was considered inappropriate to run in the cemetery. They both assured me that it was quite fine, and they people go there often to walk or run. Out of respect, I stuck to the main roads and it worked great for some speed work I needed to do.
Thanks, appreciate it! Is the area decently hilly? I'm sorry for all the questions and again, thanks for the answers already given.
It's been a number of years since I was in Hamburg, but I found the running in Stadtpark, located in Hamburg-Nord, to be very good for a major city. Decent amount of trails and soft surface in addition to paved road options. Although I did not have any workouts that made it a necessity, there is also a track facility at the west end of the park. You would have to check on public access there.
Hamburg is a great city. Enjoy.
You could run the soft Autobun to Cheeseburg!
There are lots of nice areas for running in Hamburg, especially on the outskirts. My husband used to live in the north end of the city, there you can run through some forests or on roads near the water. Hamburg and the whole surrounding area is really flat, you might need to drive down to the Harz if you want some big hills...
Once again, appreciate all the help. Might be moving there in a few months and curious about the running (scene/culture as well). All responses have been quite helpful. I even got a kick out of the Autobahn to Cheesburg comment (assuming it's totally a joke).
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
