Daniel's and others have done a solid job describing techniques for training that involves metabolic energy systems. But...I believe there is more to the story. I am convinced from my own experience and what little I have read that the neural adaptations to training are also important. The catch is this info seems to be less widely understood or available. I want to better understand what is behind the 'skill' of running so I can incorporate into training.
Let me give an example --after many months without this type of training, last week I ran 8 x 200 in a workout and then also ran 20 x 100 hills in another workout. Despite having overall fatigue and soreness from the hill work, the next day I had spring spring in my step on my easy run. I felt lighter and stronger, more open stride etc.. This was dramatic to me; I believe more so because most of my training is at LT or slower these days.
Where can I find a good overview of the science behind this phenomenon and more importantly, where can I read about the best way to train to maximize neural adaptations?
