Hello everyone.
Some background: my daughter is a freshman in HS but has been running AAU/USATF track for a few years. She works with a private coach. Of late, the coach has lost his access to train kids on the HS track. Subsequently, he has been training them on local roads or soccer fields. Most of the running is the equivalent of track intervals. My daughter has begun to complain that her knees are getting really sore. I don't doubt this because, to me, this is too much hard running on hard surfaces.
My questions are:
1) Do you think that hard running (like intervals) on pavement is too hard on the joints and too much potential for injury, or do you think this is an acceptable workout?
2) What type of comparable workout can she do, given that everything is covered in snow and ice here? There is no indoor track in the entire city so that is not an option.
Once high school track starts this won't be an issue (no private coaching allowed).
