A little background: after four pelvic stress fractures in a year and a half, my orthopedic specialist finally ordered a DEXA scan. The scan revealed I have osteoporosis at age 33 (I'm male).
I met with an endocrinologist, had blood work, and during the follow-up appointment yesterday I learned that I my prolactin levels are high (30 ng/mL) and my testosterone is low (330). The endo told me that there's a high chance that I have a benign tumor on my pituitary gland that's causing the high prolactin level, the high prolactin level is causing the low testosterone level, and the low testosterone level is causing the bone loss. I'm scheduled for an MRI of the pituitary gland as well as additional blood work.
This was a pretty shocking (and scary) diagnosis. However, the endo said that if it is a pituitary tumor, it can be treated with medication and surgery won't be needed.
Have any of you dealt with this situation or know anything about it?
Thanks for your help.
