We had our area championship meet on Tuesday, and I had the slowest race of my high school career. Last week I ran 18:01 at a dual meet, and I was trying to go sub-18 for the first time at this meet. I got excited at the start, so I hammered the first mile and stayed with the 16:30 guys, splitting 5:12 for the first mile, which was relatively flat. The second mile was uphill and incredibly technical: my 2 mile split was 11:30. I blew up in the third mile, I went into oxygen debt and had to walk for almost two minutes, finishing in a shameful 20:40. My time was terrible, but what does this race indicate as far as fitness? The Macmillan calculator says that a 5:12 mile indicates 18:00 shape, so what should I be able to run?
