For the letsrun parents here, do you think private high schools are truly worth $30 - 40k a year?

If you don't want your kid to be surrounded by black or brown people then yes they're worth it.
Do they add value? Sure. Are there other, cheaper alts to public school? Sure.
Parochial school
Home school
Home school network
Charter school
Talented & Gifted programs (assuming...)
I live in an affluent town with great schools, but while SOME of the students are okay (and ALL go to kollidge), MANY are... criminals/bullies/whiners/losers/ne'er-do-wells/etc.
They've got those at private skools too, but the bell-curve tails are fatter...and more skewed.
That's easy. No. No way.
Ask Obama
Generally I don't think so but if you live someplace where the public schools are really bad maybe they are.
Depends where you live, of course. Newark, for example...
Everything is relative. It depends on your options.
Depends on the town. I live in MA (which has among the best schools in the country), and my town's public schools are among the best in the state (92% go on to 4 year college, 6% go on to 2 year college, 2000 students, average 2013 SAT scores Reading: 612, Math: 648 Writing: 616 Total SAT score: 1,876. That's #3 in MA behind a charter school an another district school). I moved to this town because of the public schools. Home prices reflect this. The vast majority of parents in my town send their kids to the public schools for the same reason. We already pay for it, but much less than $40K per year (that's what they cost for non-boarding now. Boarding is $50K+).
It's all about network and reputation. If you have the means to send your kid to a well-known boarding school like Choate, your kid will have a leg up on getting into an Ivy league school. To a lesser degree, most catholic high schools have agreements with catholic universities and if you can graduate HS, you will gain entry. Is private education better? On average, it's a similar level though there are some crap public schools and teachers. If I lived in a district where my HS was garbage, I would sooner move a few towns over to where public schools are competitive and have a good reputation than simply send my kid to private school, which is both expensive and not my preference.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
