Are these schools real colleges. I live in New Jersey and have never heard of these schools. Not just for sports, but are they academically sound?

Yes they are real colleges. They are all quite small but the teams are still plenty competitive. Running wise they are about equivelent to D2 but just not as much depth. Academics however they are a little less impressive but you can still get a good degree
Mostly made of small, liberal arts and Christian schools. They are academically on par, if not better than D2 schools. In terms of competition, they are better than D3 (because they offer scholarships, hence foreign athletes) and a little less competitive than D2. If I had to do it all over again (I ran D1), I would have considered more D2 and NAIA schools because there's some really good coaches, better environment to develop, have success, and more options on where to go (give great academic/athletic packages).
