Im a senior runner in Illinois and I know Jesse pretty well. I've raced against him multiple times and we try to keep in touch like a lot of runners here in Illinois. There were numerous reasons why he chose to run for Illinois. Yes he got some better offers from different schools (I don't think he would appreciate me giving any information away), but he ultimately chose where he was most comfortable. He knows plenty of the guys on the team, and he knows the Illinois program has some bright days ahead. Also be on the lookout for some other top Illinois highschoolers committing to Illinois too ;)

Plenty of reasons to choose a particular school besides running. The chances of this kid extending a serious running career beyond college are slim as it is. If Illinois is the school he thinks is the best fit for him, then perhaps he made a mature decision.

Zack Smith- 4:13, 9:07, 3rd in state XC; 3rd in state 1600 as JR; NXN individual qualifier

Dan Lathrop - 4:18, 9:06

Billy Magnesen- 4:16, 9:12

Luke Schroer- 4:15

Tony Zea- 1:54, 4:15, 3rd in state 800m (soccer player, never ran XC)

Sure, that's not a contending for the podium type recruiting class, but Illinois hasn't even made nationals as a team in YEARS. If Stewart keeps getting classes like that and proves himself a decent coach, he should be able to produce a competitive team. Especially if a kid like Reiser comes every couple of years and pans out at the collegiate level.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them get a very solid recruiting class backing up Reiser -- the past couple years of Illinois high school guys seem to all be very close: Magnesen's team won state last year and is quite strong again, and Smith's team was runners up, and has a strong senior this year, Ryan Clevenger, who as a jr ran 4:11 and 9:07. If they could land a guy like that backing up Clevenger, they'd be on the right path.

Fortunately, during his college search, Jesse was looking for more than a "national championship" caliber team. He'll get an excellent education at Illinois and likely have some real opportunities to succeed on the course and track - more than can be said for the top-notch recruits who think they'll be able to score a championship at someplace like Stanford and just seem to get injured and can't live up to the hype.
