I'm finding it harder to buy shorts with inseams of 5" or less in sports stores or even specialty running shops.
Does anyone know why this trend in the shorter models?
Are they more comfortable?

It may be cheaper to make the basketball-style shorts and some don't have the inner liner?
I saw some at Old Navy, and some with the compression-style liners at a shop nearby. The ON version were much cheaper, so I picked up a pair to try out.
I was wondering that myself while doing some early Christmas Shopping this weekend.
I recall watching a video of the Tokyo '64 Olympics men's marathon. The shorts a lot of the guys were wearing looked AWFULLY worn, if not all-but-ratty.
I am old enough to recall the all-nylon style of shorts and tops.
lol @ "hip hop style" shorts. A google search of that term links me to images of Rocawear jean shorts...not particularly the type you are talking about here.
That was the best description I could come up with.

Come on now. What about basketball shorts, cross-fit shorts, or longer running shorts? Plenty of sports utilize knee length shorts as a standard now.

Apparel companies do this on purpose to make people buy more often.
If you want to buck the trends, buy online. Asics still makes good stuff.
Apparel companies have gone to the longer shorts because they sell better to the average recreational (i.e., fat) runner.
Seriously, look at the mid-pack and slower of any race and imagine the guys in split shorts... not a pretty sight.
people are fatter and people will make fun if you if you wear short shorts.
go to running warehouse, short shorts up the wazzu. i second the recommendation on asics, i have a coupe pair of 3" inseam asics shorts i love. nike also has some 2" inseam shorts as well that rock.
have to be careful to look if you are buying true split shorts, or just short shorts with a notch.
and seriously, hip hip shorts?

Fat girl runners still wear shorts.
Seriously? There are people who still train in split shorts?!

I've been training in longer shorts for as long as they've been around. I'm a 45 year old, 2:50 marathoner and would look rediculous wearing the same shorts as the high school kids.
Politics aside, these two guys were man enough to wear proper running shorts as recently as the 90s.
YES!
'Hip hop shorts' was the description which came to mind.
Was I supposed to call them "long shorts"?
Gee whiz.
(shrugs again)
However...thank you for the tip on running warehouse.
The DO have a good number of the old style.
(bows in thanks)
longer of course but i am old

Yep. Got heckled by a carload of teenage girls last week.
I got a "nice legs" holler from a Woman a year or so ago.
I waved and said "thank you".
As a lady I know (and who is athletic and hot) once told me "As my Mother told me, start worrying about the day when they DON'T holler".

Says the attention-starved, affirmation-needy friend of yours.
My balls are freakin' huge. In not bragging, mind you, the rest of the package is meh average. But seriously? I really do need some extra fabric for deez guys.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
