Right.
Not billionaire Hedge Fund thieves. But middle class teachers are the ones getting over.
Solid thinking.
A later start means a later finish.
I, as a teacher, would prefer to have us start on the earlier side. But this is a selfish reason. If it is more conducive to the learning of my students then I would support the later start.
I also coach, so a later finish means that practice will end later, which means that it will definitely be dark for the second half of practice in the late fall and early spring. It also means that I will have less time with my family, which is very important to me.
I already get to school a little before 7 and leave around 5:30 or so. And yes, all year. As the XC coach, the runners use my room as a hub of sorts to meet before their winter runs. They tend to leave their bags in my room, so I don't leave until they get back. I get most of my work done in the morning before school (less interruptions), so I would still get there at the same time even if they moved the start time up.
So, though I prefer the earlier start, if it helps my students to learn better with a later start then I would support the later start.
School times in the US should mirror the work hours of parents. It is silly to have people scramble out of bed to dump their kids off at 7:30 and then sit around and wait to start work at 8:30-9. It is also incredibly inefficient to have kids scattered around different after school programs and to have latch key kids because schools dump kids out on the street two to three hours before their parents get off work. Start the school day later and have it go later. Get rid of all the after school programs. Get kids off the street after school and before parents come home.
