Hi, I'm 30 years old and have had various ailments throughout my running life, but none of them remotely compares to my recent bout of PTT. I never really got above 20 to 25 miles a week, never trained for even half-marathons, and would typically mix running a few days a week with elliptical work, cross training (Insanity, Cross-Fit, etc). Generally healthy, but I stayed away from running more than 2 or 3 days a week due to various leg and back issues I've had in the past. Anyway, about a year ago, I got my first ever case of PTT. I got home from a run and felt a twinge on my inner ankle by the bone but didn't think much of it, just thought it was a common ache during a run. When I got home, the inside of my ankle was really swollen (it kinda freaked me out cause I'd never seen swelling like that on my ankles) and after seeing an ankle specialist, was immediately put in a CAM boot for 3 weeks and told to do virtually nothing with my legs, not even elliptical. It was tough, but I stayed off it completely and it actually healed pretty well. I was working out/running within a week or two of taking the CAM boot off, and never had to do physical therapy. Well, this last bout has been far worse. I tweaked it doing Insanity, and worked through it for a few days thinking it was just soreness (after all, my entire body was sore from the workouts). When I realized it was actually my PTT again, I stopped those workouts, wore a regular brace and took it easy for a few weeks. When that didn't help, I went to the doctor and again got put in a CAM boot for a few weeks. I didn't do anything that caused any pain workout wise (elliptical was OK, didn't hurt before, during or after), and used the boot for about 3 weeks. Upon taking the boot off, I immediately developed symptoms again. Since then, I've gone back and forth between rest, physical therapy with massage, stretching and strengthening, NSAID creams and advil, etc etc etc. Basically, nothing has worked. I haven't ran since symptoms began almost 3 months ago, and even though doing the elliptical or similar workouts doesn't hurt, I've stayed away generally because it's just not getting any better. Even walking hurts sometimes and it's super sore when I wake up in the morning to the point that I have to hobble at first. Once it loosens up it's generally pain free, but I'm just so tired of dealing with this. Anyone have any advice? Again, this time around I tried the CAM boot, physical therapy, ICE, massage, etc etc etc. NOTHING is working and it's super frustrating.
