I'm not too happy with what's on the market and would like to make my own with existing shoe materials. Any of you have experience with this you'd be willing to share?

The first thing you'll want to acquire is a waffle iron. The second thing you'll absolutely need is a respirator to avoid harm from the toxic fumes.
I do. It's not rocket science. Get or make some lasts and buy some kangaroo leather. Buy a can of barge cement and some sandpaper.
Experiment.
I use Nike Mayfly soles as my base and rebuild the uppers.

Really? If so, you should put a blog post or two together on this and post it.
About 4 years ago I emailed nike requesting to buy sheets of shark skin so I could make some custom spikes. They said no.

Why would you think they would say otherwise?
More to the point, I actually really like the new Hoka Clifton, but with the right length shoe they are not nearly wide enough for me. Even Altras with their supposed wide toe box don't fit me right. My feet are "narrow-to-normal" according to those people like Al Bundy who have worked in the shoe industry for a long time.
For Captain Oblivious, or anyone else with an idea, if I wear a size 10 Hoka Clifton, should I be able to simply by a size 14 (biggest they offer), then trim the sole and sew a new upper to it?
No delusions of grandeur that I'm going to revolutionize the market with some brilliant shoe, I'm just sick of my feet being crushed.

The basics of shoemaking can be found on dozens of DIY sites. Barge cement eliminates the need for stitching although that's not that difficult to master.
I may put something together but I'm concerned that Phil Knight would put a hit on me for gluing his soles to my uppers.
