Question about cadence and pace:
I'm a longtime runner with some injuries in the past few years. One of the recommendations I've tried to follow is the 180 strides/minute in terms of cadence. I have the new Garmin 620 which helps with that, but even before I had this I would try to count my steps, etc, for an estimation.
Anyway, getting to 180 strides/minute is crazy hard. I'm 6'0" and weigh about 157 pounds but every time I pick it up to 180 two things happen:
1) I go faster, which I don't always want -- I like to keep my easy days @ 5:00-5:15/km but this is very difficult if not impossible at 180 steps per minute. I increase cadence to 180 and my pace quickens to 4:40/km almost naturally (and with that HR and effort).
2) If I try to go slow and also maintain 180, I feel like an idiot. It feels like my stride is super short and I look ridiculous. It's almost like running on the spot.
I don't even know if it's possible for me to hit the 180/minute and have a slow day.
As for the faster workouts (track stuff, tempos, etc), I don't have to focus on the cadence/pace issue as much because the goal is to go faster. Cadence picks up naturally as does my stride length.
P.S. Not sure if it's relevant but I'm a sub-3-hour marathoner.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
