Great run for Sage today! Nobody was even close. The ending of the course was a little modified from last year and there was an extra 350' of climb. I don't know when the opening climb changed (maybe year before last), but the opening "8.3" miles was actually 9.2 and they didn't bother to correct it, so the entire distance was long. I guess the finish was also too long, so it was probably about 33 miles. I was there racing... I started off conservatively to keep my legs for later in the race and I started picking it up and passing people at mile 10. I was having a good race through Pacific Mine (16.3), but all the dust in that area caused my lungs to constrict and I couldn't run anymore without having exercise-induced asthma attacks (even a brisk walk was bringing it on by mile 20), so I dropped at mile 21.6. I'm annoyed, but it is what it is. Hopefully now that I finally had a bad race, I'll be motivated to train better for my fall marathon.
By the way, Pat Smyth was there and DNF'd, kind of surprisingly. Pat's PRs are 62:01 and 2:15:00, and has gotten back into quite good shape lately, recently winning the SLC Half over 62/2:15 guy Mario Macias (66:01, worth somewhere in the 63s on a course like Chicago) and destroying the field at Xterra Trail Championships (2nd and 3rd were Joe Gray and Max King, about 1 and 4 minutes back... Who beats Max King by 4 minutes in a trail half???). Smyth ran with the lead for awhile today, but blew up and had to drop.
