She's back with her old coach, who coached her to 1:57
Mary could do 52
nuh uh.
yes huh
Who?
Long Beach Poly Girl just ran 53.37 NL at Arcadia.
Vessey is one of the few that can beat Cain at 400 (certain) and 800 (probable)
good to see her comeback
Alysia Montano is the only US female mid distance runner with 52 speed. I have little doubt that Alysia or the Maggie Vessey I saw today would not have much competition from either Mary Cain or Brenda Martinez in a 400. The catch is that they're not running 400; They're running 800, and the question with Montano and Vessey is whether they have the aerobic power to get through rounds and still have enough for a final.
And Montano needs to get through her head the difference between front running and temporary insanity (hint: watch Chanelle Price's indoor 800 final).
Maggie's not young anymore by track athlete standards, and so it's good to see her notching a 400m PR. This kind of performance bodes well for the upcoming season.
At the same time, I can't help but temper my expectations. Several seasons ago, Flotrack did a piece on her, her workout routine, her coach--all the usual stuff. This was back when she was with the coach whom she's now returned to. And I was quite surprised by how little she did in the way of endurance work.
Granted, the 800m is a mixed bag, with many different recipes for success. But given how speed-heavy her training appeared from that Flotrack piece, it seems to me that this sort of 400m performance should be expected. The real question is whether she can 1. translate it into comparable 800m success 2. maintain that 800m-level fitness across an entire season.
And if she can do those things, then why did she leave this coach to begin with?
Roesler 51.45 relay carry in 2011:

IAAF has Roesler's 400 PR at 53.25, so very close now between Vessey and Roesler at 400. But Montano is at a different level. Vessey might be within sight of 1:56.
Maggie's not with Rose Monday. I think she went with Johnny Gray for a while and now is back with Greg Brock, her Santa Cruz coach.
That outfit she wore at the Stanford Invitational was not very flattering.

Kick your dog, he's lying to you! She looked great!
Just as an aside, she is so hot. I am in lurvvvvvvv.
Great 400 ! Nice to create some chit chat her on the board , but thats about it.
Coach you nailed it , rounds and endurance. Brenda is running a 5K PR' Vessey 400. Strength and endurance are needed for the season.
Good to Vessey back out there.
oregon recruit raevynn rogers who is a 2:03 for 800 runner ran 53.36 for 400 at age 12, she ran her personal best last year 53.34, interesting to see what she does her final year in high school and at oregon.
raevyn rogers has also gone 24.71 fot the 200
Fantastic time for Vessay but did she have to wear this gawd-awful outfit? Ugh!
Wondered what happened to that phenom. Marginal improvement age 12 to 16/17, but puberty can do that. Hope she keeps at it.

I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
