Besides driving drunk. What hardware did he win?
Besides driving drunk. What hardware did he win?
Correct. His talent is a myth which was initially hyped up by Nike to sell shoes.
5/10. Not much on the originality scale, but you'll likely generate some angry respnses, so good work there.
He's actually a complete unknown to everyone except LetsRun posters.
Pre was fast for his day, he didn't sit and he went for the win, not time. He, Shorter and Rodgers made running matter. It has been steadily downhill since the early 1980s. We now have people posting about a non-trip, an obscure road race in Carlsbad and about Rupp's acne.

There are pictures of the wreck available if you want to take the tasteless route.
I was very close friends with Pre. In fact, we used to do long runs together. I also was very close with Bill Bowerman. We used to barbeque together at the lake. Alberto and I are very close friends. I am very close with Galen Rupp. I used to be very close with Joakim Cruz. I used to go shopping with Rudy Chapa. Andrew Wheating and I used to finger paint together.

Boring, NO.

You lost all credibility when you said you barbecued together. I bet you had a cookout, not a barbecue.
Roger Bannister is.
End of thread.
Centro gets 4th in the Olympics = legend
Pre gets 4th in the Olympics = overrated
Make up your mind people!
Potentially overrated as a pure runner, but it was his spirit and young death that make his name still well known. He had great potential to become an all time great if the fate was not the same. He did have many American records at the time, keep in mind. The way that he held himself made for great publicity, which did help keep his legend alive as a young, cocky runner, with all the balls needed to make a great race. All in all, I find it a bit disrespectful to be smiting him like this seeing what he went through.

Overrated means that he has been rated higher than he actually was. As far as I know, there have been no movies about Centro, not track meets named after him, and no road races named after him. And by the way, Centro was the bronze medalist at the World Championships also.

Seriously? Pre's fourth is and always has been overly commemorated, while centro's fourth is thought of as a failure
I do think we've heard more than enough about Pre for awhile. A ten-year moratorium might be good. Find some 21st century runners to talk about.
This notion that he was drving drunk really should be challenged. Yes the test for blood alcohol came back as being over the limit. But there is good evidence to doubt the accuracy of that test. We know Frank Shorter felt comfortable and safe letting Pre drive him home. At the party from where Pre was driving from he was reportedly drinking, but not heavily. For example he was not pounding beers and I don't think there was heavy alcohol being consumed. Moreover, evidence at the scene of the crash actually points to Pre having reasonably good reactions to avoid whatever was in his path. Yes, his driving maybe was impaired somewhat from drinking. And perhaps he was driving carelessly apart from alcohol. But driving while illegally intoxicated is doubtful. Nobody should take it as gospel.

I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
