Throw di elbows and straddle over the steeples, shoot for 8:15
Don't go out too fast and pace yourself smart throughout the race. You do not want to fall apart in a steeplechase.
Don't try to clear the barriers completely. My coach told me that's only efficient if you're running at ~4:40 mile pace. Just put one foot on it as you go over and land on the ground with the other foot. This is just an all-around better method if you're new to the steeple.
As for your time, add about 2:00-2:15 to your 1600m time and that's a good goal to shoot for.

This is good advice. I coach a girl who runs in the 6:40s and she steps on every barrier.
Carrying slightly more speed into the water jumps will help too.
6:00 would be a good time goal. Start hard, and finish fast.

Why some people on here even post?
6 Minute for a 2k steeplechase is a completely, totally unrealistic goal for an 8th grader.
My son is on a track scholarship and as a true freshman, this year finished 5th in the conference in the 3k steeplechase with a time of 10:03 That is a roughly a 6:30 2k pace probably runs it closer to 6 flat because of the shorter distance. If you run a 6 flat 2k steeplechase as an 8th grader the USOC will be knocking on your door
