Just when I was starting to lose all motivation, I found out I'm anemic and probably have been for years and just never got tested before. That's bad, but good now that I can treat it and feel better on runs, particularly races. I thought I was just slow, but after my legs burned and cramped horribly in the past few hilly cross country races, I knew something was off.
Thanks to my "suck it up" mentality, I thought this was how I was supposed to feel and that I'm just slow. I'd train harder, run more, lift weights, hill train, etc. to no avail. As suggested by xenonscreams (thanks LetsRun), I finally had my blood tested yesterday. My ferritin was 11. I had some other results that were outside the normal range as well, but I think the main culprit is the low ferritin.
My question for those who have dealt with this is how much did you improve once you brought your level back to a healthy number?
