BYU ran quite badly at the Mountain Regional but Air Force and Colorado State also had amazing races. If you take Ward out of the equation, they finish 6th in the region. They were (without Ward) supposedly the 5th best in the country.

No way they dropped that far back just because of Ward.
Who?
Just by taking out Ward and going to their 6th man they have more points than both AF and CSU. They're severely overrated.
Ward finishes 4th - great race
BYU finishes 4th and qualifies
They held out a couple of guys.

That seems...risky
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Eyestone told the boys to try and run easy enough that they would take 3rd or 4th. (Ward being the exception to test his racing legs). They'll show up when it counts. They are the real deal.
From some of their guys tweets it says they sat 4-7 and their top guys took it easy...it's like they called off their entire team just to rest for nat'ls
Yep, thought so. Eyestone is either crazy, or . . . crazy smart. But should be fun to watch next week. Real risky.
"With the NCAA championships only eight days away, Eyestone decided to bench four of his top runners for the region meet — Steve Flint, Jon Nelson, Tom Gruenewald, Spencer Gardner. He instructed his other NCAA-bound runners — Ward, Tylor Thatcher and Jason Witt — to give a fast but restrained effort. He wanted to qualify with the least effort possible and knew fourth place would do the trick." -Deseret News
When will people learn that regionals means nothing to these top teams. Its an easy effort race. Its all about getting through till next week. Its only an 8 day recovery from a 10k which is their first of the season. nau and Colorado also ran easy, though maybe not quite as much. And it wasn't that risky since (if you know anything about the point system) byu has the most points out of any at large team. They were going no matter what and pushing everyone ahead of them in.

Yea the only teams who care about regionals are the crappy ones
Colorado also finished third behind New Mexico and Northern Arizona. You think they fell that much? No, they took it easy also to be ready for Nationals.

But the buffs also had that make a statement race recently, after which Wetmore had a little fun with his comments. It looks like Eyestone's playing to win and trying to take advantage (and he doesn't need much of an advantage) of what might ultimately be shown to be a rare strategic error by the buffs.
Crazy smart.
You guys are definitely giving BYU too much credit. I was at the race and guys who are definitely some of their big guns were hurting back where they shouldn't be. The ones who took it easy were NAU and CU. They just had a massive pack until the final 400m and then raced. BYU's guys fell off WAY before that moment. No way on Earth are they a top 5 team with that performance.
I was there too and some of the BYU guys did look like they were struggling but they were the B team guys. 4 of their starters didn't run ,I think they will be fine .
We will see this Saturday. The guys u saw hurting were byu's b team
