I ran the race today, saw all the elites in the warmup area. German was not there. Absolutely perfect racing weather- would highly recommend this one to anybody wanting to make a trip to CA. Similar depth to Bay to Breakers without all the BS.
I used to live right next to the course and never ran down that final hill so quickly. It's crazy to have that right at the end. Very well organized, but perhaps too many people in the 'Elite' corral.
Agree with what you said but if you are indeed lived there you know Santa Cruz. Hell, they didn't even time the thing until 2011. When they boosted up the prize money the locals threw a fit. There is progress. I would think if you are top 100 you earn a spot the next year, otherwise you need to contact the meet director for an elite spot. 200 is more manageable plus it keeps all the people who clearly lied out. Earn your way in!
But like I said, it's Santa Cruz. You're lucky to get your time now!
Yes, you get a time now, but not an accurate place! A lot of older, not so fit "runners," start an hour or so early and walk the course. They are given a finishing time and place that is false. A sixty year old woman who finishes in 37 min and has no 2 mile split time obviously started early. I'm in the 60-69 division and found 6 runners in front of me with no 2 mile split time. Every one of these runners (walkers) is moving another runner down in the results. It's not their fault-they are not intentionally cheating. It is the fault of the outfit doing the timing. The Wharf to Wharf gives special clothing to the top 100 male and female finishers. I'm sure a few females in the 101-110 places lost out on their hard-earned award. The runners most affected are older males (50 and up) and female runners. The same thing happened last year. The solution is obvious: If you don't cross the starting line you shouldn't get a finishing time!!!
"most affected are older males (50 and up) and female runners."
No one cares. You are an old white man who has gotten everything he has ever wanted. If this is your one gripe in life, then you are among the most privileged on the planet. So you bumped down 6 spots in your age division. I always assumed bragging was something people grew out of earlier in life. I love the part about "special clothing." I'll send you mine if its that big of a deal. If not, you can just swing by the goodwill and pick up some of that "special clothing" from years past.
I'm pretty sure that gets cleaned up. They don't mail the awards for two weeks or so.
Hey, don\'t be surprised, Mr. Brett is a boss! I see him running all the time. German Fernandez was a no show, and Chris Solinsky is still coming off of injury, and he\'s more used to running on a track than roads.
I'm not sure about the exact method, but they make sure to scratch out the result if there is no start registered on the chip and only a finishing time. My friend was ranked 120th place, but after he checked later he was in the top 90.

John Walker, Calm down. This is not the only 'one gripe' I have in life and we're all among the most privilged on the planet. Just to be born healthy, in this country, at this time in history is being pretty fortunate. The special clothing doesn't affect me. If you were able to comprehend, what I said was that "The top 100 males and top 100 females" receive some special clothing. (a jacket or something-don't really know)I know there are some local runners (male & female) who's goal is to make that 'top hundred.' I'm lucky to finish in the top 1000 for Christ's sake! One final point: I know a lot of runners in their 60's and 70's who are still doing speed work. We are really slow my your standards, but for those of us who have been running for 40 years or more does that mean our racing days should be over. Personally, I can't run one mile as fast as I once averaged in the Marathon, but still enjoy trying to see how I place among my peers. (my peers being those who you think should crawl away into some hole and die) Why shouldn't my running be as meaningful to me as yours is to you? It's the racing that makes my running rewarding. I know a sixty year old female who would have won her division (not important to you-who cares) but would have been listed as 10th (an estimate) because of walkers listed in front of her in the results. (I clicked on the runners names and eliminated those with no 2 mile split.) My complaint is: The company doing the timing should provide as accurate results as they can. Not doing so may not affect THE ELITE but there are thousands of others (granted most may not care)who are affected. If a runner doesn't cross the start line list their name at the end of the results with NO TIME. And no, you never outgrow lust, bragging or the love of peanut butter & jelly sandwiches!
Just checked. The results are still screwed up. An 82 year old woman running 47:47, 7:58 pace! They never fixed last years results and doesn't appear they will fix this years. Just hire a competent timing company.
