When you're faster wire-wire, then make it fast & lead.
When you're faster wire-wire, then make it fast & lead.
Yes, it works great when you're in an event where positive splitting can be a good tactic (800) or you're in a league of your own (Jager).
Jenny's was really impressive, although Molly Huddle did a lot of leading, give her lots of credit too.

Huddle only lead for about 4800 m . . .
Lagat led most of it - and won.
Leading 80s doesnt count for anything. If Lagat led 66s, he likely would have lost. True was the one who did whatever leading there was, and he paid for it.
Simpson is also a terrible example. Huddle was the won who led early, and she lost.
Jaeger was 15 seconds better than anyone in a race where leading gives you a technical edge (clear path to barrier).
TTC doesn't quite get it.
Jager didn't lead until less than half to go.
Jenny didn't lead until the the very end.
Fun fact:
It only works in the 800
What!?!? Simpson didn't do any leading.

Wanna Gebhri-bet?
Cobral led in the Olympic Heats led & advanced because of it.
Many of Ryan Hall's best races had him pushing the pace. You wanted him to sit on Ritz at the '08 trials, because leading "too much work"?
Arguably U.S.'s best race in history - Joan Benoit Olympic Marathon - had her lead from mile 2.
Lagat running 80's counts - though not pushing the pace part, but plain leading. Often I said leading lets you control your ideal pace - He did that.
Webb's a 3X Nat'l Champion, because he led much of races & forced others to be fitter than they were.
Bob Kennedy, Todd Williams made a USATF Championships living by leading.
Gabe's best moment was jumping into the lead early.
Ritz in last year's 10,000M.
El G's 1st Olympic Gold - He led half the race.

You're right, I remember Huddle leading most of it but wasn't paying close attention and assumed there was some truth to the OP's statement.
you know what's really good? leading in the last 10 meters. I could make a list that you guys wouldn't believe of the people who led in the last 10. Guess what? they almost always WIN!

Dude, we get it. You say the exact same thing after every championships. We know how you feel already.
Flanagan put on a clinic on how to win wire to wire in the 10K. If Galen is as good as I think, he could have done the same in the men's 10K.
Watching these slow tactical races is pretty boring unless you watch it on DVR for the last 3-4 laps. I watched the entire women's 10K in awe of Flanagans dominance. Of course, she won't be able to try that at worlds, but I have a lot of respect for her.

And ppl on here always call the leader a sacrificial lamb. So 1-2X a year, I correctly post otherwise.
And incorrectly attribute it to Simpson
Russell Brown
His 1500m best over the last year was top 3 in this field.
He lead the race.
He got used by slower runners Elliott, Leer, etc.
You do realize leading is a mental thing right?
If there's a runner that does not feel comfortable leading, they'll follow. If there's a runner that feels comfortable leading, they'll lead. Nick Symmonds has won a few times that way and Solomon won today from the front.
It's all personal preference and comfort.
I agree with the OP in saying that it is sometimes good. No need to be a hero every time out, need to let someone else do the work sometimes.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
