Maybe AlSal can help.
The obsession with a few athletes like Hasay and Webb get really old, but if you've paid any attention to her career at all it would be obvious that one thing she is not is a quitter.
After a disappointing performance she has always come back and put it all on the line in another race. Even going back to high school, she dominated Footlocker as a Freshman, finished back the next 2 years and rebounded to win as a senior.
I think her tenacity and resilience might end up being her greatest strength in her post-collegiate career.
That's exactly it. Alberto see's a gal who is focused and not a quitter and who is a happy person who enjoys running.
There are a couple of things that people haven't noticed and haven't paid attention to. Alberto has been signing athletes that don't stress -- that are naturally happy people. Sounds like a simple thing, it isn't -- ask AJ Acosta.
The next two things on the check list, are do they enjoy running, and do they enjoy racing. Sounds simple.
I posted these a few years ago about Rupp. That a few keys to his success is that he genuinely enjoys running, and he likes racing -- he enjoys running the way he enjoys soccer, it's fun. And he is fearless as a racer, because he likes racing. (Now imagine that, over all those years of losing, placing 2nd, 3rd, he still loved racing.)
Over the next year Alberto said exactly the same things in interviews.
Think of it in Golf terms. Some guys stay focused with the pressure on, some guys get the yips.
Obviously Alberto wants to coach really talented people. He also came from a tough childhood, and took every race and defeat way to freaking hard...as he's written about...he realized along the way that athletes that can shake it off have a better shot at sustainable and repeatable success. (That said, most runners lose most of the time, but to have a shot, better to be a runner who digs running and racing...)
