How far is that in real distance.
Its up there. And he threw 61 w/ the big implement?
Amazing athlete
Jonathan Edwards' Triple Jump distance of 60'04" is really impressive.
Consider it is basically a span of the top of the pitcher's mound to home plate in three steps.
Inessa Kravets set her 50'10" record in the same WC meet as Edwards did. The WC in Goteborg.

I think he threw 67 feet with the 16-pound - but not certain
You don't throw it, you put it. Thus the name.

seems like you could throw it as well:

Given that Jacko Gill threw nearly that far as a 15 year old, I don't think it's the best record out there.

Throw is generally take to do mean an extended arm movement.
The Shot Fling would be better than Shut Put.
a : to throw forcefully, impetuously, or casually

Edwards triple jump record is 18.29 metres, can someone tell me how far Mr Carter "put" the shot?
Didn't Houston McTear set a world record as a high schooler?

That was 24.78m, with a shot that was 3/4 the weight of the adult implement (so just short of 5.5kg).
Here's his series on that memorable day:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMVgbAgDSzgIt is difficult to convey to people (who don't throw, or coach throws) how well he used his right leg in those throws, especially the last. Even in this slowish-motion footage, it's almost too fast to follow. There was a lot more going on there than just "big and strong."

You're right, Gill threw only a foot or so shorter...with a shot that was about half a kilo lighter.
Michael Carter put/threw/flung the 16-pound (adult implement) shot 67-9. Quite impressive. His daughter won a NCAA title as well.
Houston McTear set world record as a prepster in 1978 in 60 meters (6.54) which was not broken until 1986 by convicted druggie Ben Johnson. He ran a 9.0 100 yards in high school but was not recognized as world record as it was hand-timed.
Are we talking only highschool?

I believe Carter's best with the big boy ball is 71 4 3/4.
81' feet is incrediable expecially when you think 60' will win 95% of all state championships and 70' will 95% of all national championships. Statistically, it is definitely the greatest performance, but, is it really the greatest H.S. performance...I say it is definitelly not. The shot is almost a niche event. Big, strong, quick, athletic and being physically mature beyond your age in the U.S. 100% of the time equals power forward, offensive or defensive linemen. I suspect there are potentially other Mike Carters somewhere in the U.S who never gave the shot a try. The NCAA career rushing record holder and 1999 Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dyane in H.S. was first and foremost a football player. In H.S. he was one of the nationa's top shot putters and lead the nation in the Discus and is still ranked high up on the all-time list in the discus. Ron is a perfect example of the type of athlete who if t&f got more of would make Carter's mark seem more reasonable.
Not saying what is the greatest H.S. performance, but to put things in perpective, over 30 years ago Kim Gallagher ran 2 flat in the 800m, which at that time was the U.S. and World Jr record, it was fastest than the NCAA record and it was the 3rd fastest time in the nation that year. Also, when Kim ran that time it was in a championship meet with rounds. Think of the population of 800 meter runners versus the shot put. About 10 years later high jumper Amy Acuff accomplished close to the same thing.
Shot put and discus will always be inferior to javelin, because the javelin is something that actually makes sense to throw and can be thrown very far.
The discus is the least sensible projectile ever invented. The europeans only brought it back because they were in love with the buggerous greeks.
Currently 3 of the 4 major throw events involve heavy, clumsy objects instead of things that are good for throwing. Discus is the worst of those 3 and should be replaced with something better, like a baseball. I'd like to see who can throw a baseball farthest.
Infield wouldn't be big enough for a baseball.
