I post all my nonsensical or troll posts anonymously but I post on other more mature running forums where they know exactly who I am. Actually people here could figure out who I am too if they wanted but I am just a nobody from a little town that enjoys running and even if they found out my name it wouldn't mean anything to them.
I used to post non-anonymously, but when I did I got so much negativity thrown my way that I got really tired of it.
It's easier than logging in every time you visit the site. Also adds a little editorial commentary on your post by using names more specific to the thread.
I have a unique enough name that anyone can find where I live and get my phone number with a few seconds on google. Having received hate-mail and after my wedding announcement was in the paper (someone thought we were mixing races, based on our names) and after writing letters-to-the-editor in our local paper, I appreciate not having my real name displayed.
I would be fine with having to register the screen name using my real name, if it limited the amount of trash on here.
If I post an opinion on a topic that matters I alway use my registered screen name and have never been secretive about a guy named Tom Hyland being the human behind the wineturtle brand. If my post is an important(to me) or contrary opinion I usually include my name
On other threads like-- guess my 5K time or Coffee Girl winked at me, I most often use a name that fits or mocks the topic.
example on one of the recent boy/girl threads I posted under the name of Masters and Johnsons daughter and on a marathoning thread I might use one of the nine WR holders from the 1960s as a poster name. A good number of posters join in playing this type of "name game".

Those of us who really are coaches don't want morons from lrc harassing the institutions we work for. Many NCAA teams (Stanford for one) have no-posting rules, or in some cases, no-letsrun rules. People at those institutions cannot post as themselves or allow any kind of linkage. I have no idea if anyone like Chris Derrick ever posted here, but he was not allowed to let anyone know who he was.
Why not post anonymously? It is the idea that matters, not the speaker of the idea.
I tend to post under names that I make up on the spot that have something to do with the content of the post.
Should have said that I always use my registered name. But most coaches on here don't let our institutions be identified.
I'm not only found very easily found online, but my coin is also made via the interwebs, so you could argue I live and die by my online work and reputation. And frankly I don't trust some of the posters on LR to leave people alone. That said, I know one guy who posts under his full name and I have respect for that.

Maybe it's a "both and" situation instead of an "either or". Are you saying you're the gutless turd of a gutless slug?
But this doesn't make sense, because how could a slug with no gut even produce a turd? And even if it could, I learned in doo-doo anatomy class that turds don't have guts, so why bother modifying turd with the word "gutless"? I think you're not being very sincere.

I still say the best compromise would be that you have to register to post, but you can attach whatever handle you want to the post. You could still be free with your comments but at the same time it would be easier to track and eliminate chronic a-holes and keep them at bay.
Like some others, I attach my registered handle to most of my meaningful posts, others (usually posted in jest) I go with a topical one.
Because that's what the internet is for. I like being able to post whatever I want without having to worry about who might be reading it.

Nope. I post on here quite a bit but rarely start threads under this handle. This handle represents my serious, business self. I post under different handles when trolling to preserve the integrity of "Guppy." I also start a lot of threads dealing with my personal life that are really nobody's business and that I don't want associated with my serious, business persona, Guppy. It's really not any different than leaving your personal life at home when you come to the office. When I'm giving advice on training or commenting on a recent performance, I don't want people to get distracted by a thread I started the same day in which I ask about dealing with aging parents or getting into grad school or something like that. There's no need to ask those questions under a recognizable name and the anonymity makes things more open to general discussion and gets around any prejudices about someone's character. Furthermore, some people may know who Guppy is in real life or may come to find out, and I don't want details about my personal life on the internet just like people who write in to Ask Annie's don't provide their full real name and addresses.
Part of me does wish my trolling efforts could be recognized though. haha.

If you went to a "Sign on with Facebook" type thing this site would last 15 min.
Sure you get internet supermen, but people are more honest w/o using their real name, even if you are just talking about running stuff.. much less the political and social discussions.
Why are Facebook posts so bland and useless? Because people ARE using their real names. The real opinions come out when you get to be anonymous.
Plus, I have slowed down a lot, didn't break 20 in my last 5K, and don't want the world to know this until I at least get back near 19.
Yeah, I would post a heck of a lot less if I had to use my real name. It isn't that I am gutless, per se, but that I would think a lot more about what I was writing. Some say that is a good thing, but when it comes to internet forums, I like to be able to BS and not worry about what I am saying sticking with me for eternity.
For instance, I might participate on a thread about taking a dump on a run, but if I had to sign that John Smith, I would be less likely to participate on the thread in the first place.
I don't do a lot of mean posts, though. I don't like to talk trash about people. I think that kind of stuff is pretty messed up.
Because I'm very well known, financially secure and ridiculously good looking, and my real identity would only instigate further cognitive dissonance to my incredibly trenchant ideas.

Fair enough. But I'd also speculate that you're fearful of what your employer (institution) might think of your unabated opinions.
I can't pass judgment without having read your posts, but if you routinely get on here and call names (i.e. morons) then my guess is that you're just as cowardly as the rest of us anonymous posters.
