Seb Coe didn't win his last race
i read the story
andy norman if i recall
not really a big deal or a surprise
did lord seb know it was fixed?-the article didn't clarify
I wouldn't be surprised if the Olympic 5000 and 10000 were fixed too.
It was fixed for sure!
Farah wasn't going to beat Gebremeskel last summer over a 5000m...
Something was wrong.. and it might be that!
Sir Sebastion Coe recently wrote a book about his life, "Running My Life, The Autobiography."
Did he say anything about this in his book?
i highly doubt it
this was a bit of harmless nonsense by the read of it
as much as the 5000 would look fixed, one thing I was hearing about was a bout of bronchiitis going around the track athletes. Rupp had just caught it and it hurt him post-olympics, Levins was battling it in that final (saying he caught it after the 10000). It would not surprise me if it went through the Kenyan/Ethiopian contingent as well.
Also, as much as you would think Farah couldn't beat Gebremeskel in a 5000, I would also say Dejen could not beat Mo in any race but one that is near WR pace (Farah has ran a 53 to mark 12:53 before)
as for the 10000: I would definately be saying it was fixed if it wasn't for the relatively weak field Farah and Rupp were up against. It was pretty obvious the only decent guys in that field were Farah, Rupp and the Bekele brothers.

Galen Rupp - 12:58/26:48 guy
Tariku Bekele - 12:52/27:03 guy
Kenenisa Bekele - Sort of the equivalent of Geb in 2008 – Did run 12:55/27:02 this year
Bidan Karoki - 13:15/27:05
Zersenay Tadese - Was 5th 4 years ago and 6th this time – Did win World half later in year
His final race was at the Commonwealth Games in 1990 so the OP should have clarified what he was claiming.
And I doubt this is true.
Even if it was, who is to say Seb Coe would have lost. This is athletics, not exactly easy to control winning and losing with so many variables.
Seems like a strange payoff when it wasn't even his last race and there was nothing major at stake.
Didn't Gebremeskel close his 12:46 with a 54 this summer?
This is way above anything Farah can dream of...

Ensure not insure
Seems strange that Norman was worried that Billy might win! He raced Coe several times in 88 and 89 when Coe was past his best, and never beat Coe once. I know the organisers got Billy Konchella to pace the first lap as a respectful nod to his job in pacing the world record, so he probably got a large sum. Coe still finished the season as the 2nd fastest in the world at 1:43.38 and also beat Billy in Australia in the run up to the commonwealth games, prior to Coe's chest infection.
Perhaps Billy has elaborated somewhat to make a bit of money for himself while there is still some Olympic afterglow.
That 5000 was not a match race between Mo and Gebremeskel. Gebrehiwet is almost as good as Gebremeskel, and all three Kenyans were also better than Mo.
Mo's 10,000 PR is not from this year. All three Ethiopians showed around 27-flat form this year, while Mo had no form at all. So they could easily have killed Mo off with a fast pace, but none of them even tried. They merely took turns taking the lead and then running 68's. Tadese did it. Gebremariam did it. T Bekele too. Why would they surge to the front only to run 68's? Acting, in my opinion. Harder to accuse them of throwing the race if they spent a lap in the lead.

Duuude, pass the bowl.
How fast did either Mo or Rupp run 10k this year?
Their PR is not their form, any more than Kenny Bekele's WR was his form.
Everybody knows Andy Norman was a thug and a bully. Like Primo N.
No doubt this is for real, although whether I Billy could actually have beaten Coe at that time is open to question. The payment was just insurance for TV rights.
Steve O. was happy with him as long as there was no breakdown - AN fixed it for Ovett at his CP meets for years. By the 1989 AAA Champs, they were on opposite sides and Ovett broke down.
AN was a sergeant in the corrupt London Met police during the 1970s - think pre-Giuliani NYPD, Pelham 123 and Abner Louima - and he ran the early Crystal Palace meets while on duty from his desk phone. There must have been payola at all levels to make this happen.
Race fixing, small beer for AN.
No idea whether Billy's claim about the payoff is correct.
But his description of the race is definitely not correct. I was curious, so I looked up a youtube video of the race (just try "Coe Crystal Palace 1989"), and you'll see that Bill's claim that he was on Coe's shoulder on the final bend is not remotely true. Perhaps the rest of his memory is a little shaky too?
Here is the article
There are several factual errors both by Ikem and the writer of the article. Ikem was behind at 600m never mind on the last bend and looked like he struggled to beat Morrell to me. The article states Billy was unbeaten by a Brit runner that year. Tom McKean hammered him in July also at Crystal Palace (Power of 10) You would think a Scots paper would get that right! Just checked and Morrell beat Billy twice over 800m in 89, did they pay him to lose as well!
It also mentions Coe not being in shape and only once running under 1:45. Yes low 1:43 2 wks before! I don't doubt Norman as dishonest but was he stupid enough to pay Ikem $10k who did not beat 1:45 all year to lose runner of Coe's calibre in 1:43 shape!
