Where did this introduction occur?
So JD is saying that his "I" effort isn't hard? From an intensity perspective I never found the "R" pace to be hard, just fast and intense. But the "I" paces were harder because of the duration.
It was introduced on page 67 of his 3rd edition I believe.

I pace is supposed to be velocity at VO2 max, about 2 mile race pace. It's your basic VO2 max workout. H pace is going for the same stimulus, but by FEEL, not by his TIMES. It's the fartlek side if his training. Think about it this way. On a 100* day, on long grass and over hills you won't be running the same pace as you would on a morning track session. Instead of killing yourself trying to hit your I times, you can content yourself by running the same effort "Hard".

Plenty of people have always been content to run their workouts "hard". Nice to know that Jack has given us permission though, after all these years.
