I'm not talking the bare-minimum 800m time a guy can run to run 4:00 in the mile, I'm talking what is the average 800m time of a 4:00 guy. I would guess it's 1:51 but I don't know.

The number I usually hear as the answer to this question is 1:51.

More like 1:48.
Average 800m time of a 4:00 miler is 2:00 ;) DUHHH
Average 1:50 to 1:51.
Slowest about 1:55

Malmo, I would put the slowest at 1:53xx, but you could be right in terms of people who rarely run the 800 and thus their pb might not reflect their ability. To run a 4:00 mile with 1:55 ability would surprise me.
There are plenty of poorly trained 800m runners who can't step up when thy run the mile.
Me 1:54 4:00 and 3:40.

Oh, I know there are a lot of 800m runners who don't move up well....
However, do you think 1:54 accurately reflected your ability? Did you run that in the same year you ran 4:00 or 3:40?
Malmo, I was going to start a thread asking for your advise but I see this thread has grabbed your attention so I'll ask here.
I'm a big advocate of a yearly progression of miles but focus on the 800 and mile. I was wondering how high is too high.
I'm sitting around 100mpw right now, especially from summer until the end of winter. Will I see improvements in my 800-1500 pr's by increasing over the next 2-3 years by increasing my mileage to 140-150?
At least 2:00... ?

In college my best mile was 4:01.49 and my best 800m 1:52.05. I believed I was capable of running faster than 4:00 for the mile but never really had an honest go at it most of the mile races I competed in dropped into the tacticle range and would be won in 4:04-4:09. I ran 4:01 off the front actually going for it on that day.

Why would an 800-1500 guy want to run 140-150?
It might be OK to top out at 115-125 for three or four weeks at a time, but you should probably never go above 115.
90-115 is plenty for an 800/1500 runner.
Lewandowski run about 90 at most, hardly much need for anything more, and if, only until before February. Are you a slow runner?

Wow riley master's 800 pr is only 1:54.6? I'm sure he could do better
I think the average 4 flat miler would at least be able to mix it up with the best high school 800 specialists in any given year... So I'll say a 1:49.
Considering 1:52 is usually considered the bare minimum, I would guess 1:51 for distance oriented guys and 1:49-1:50 for more speed oriented guys.
