For a race that is so steeped in history, hard to beleive it is difficult to find complete results from past races.
Anyone know where they might be? Specifically looking for 1980 - 1984.
Thanks.

Partial are here. I've never seen full results anywhere on the web.
Thanks. I wasn't that good! :-) (although it was cool reading some of those names from the past).Hard to believe complete results can't be scanned in. Perhaps Tom Derderian knows?

You might want to try contacting the Boston Public Library:
According to their catalog, they have the recordbooks for 1985-1992 and 1996-1998. But they may have more than what is shown in their catalog.
http://catalog.mbln.org/ipac20/ipac.jsp?uri=full%3D3100001~%213199474~%211
Also if you search in WorldCat, you will see that quite a few libraries have some sort of holdings of BAA publications and it is not always clear from the records exactly what each library has.
Of course you could also try contacting the BAA directly...
Hope that helps!
For years the Globe used to produce a results section. I regret not saving them. If I ever had the motivation, I'd go look at microfilm at the BPL.
wow this is really cool... does not really help out with your question, but check out the digital library of The LA84 Foundation. Tons of cool stuff in there including a bunch of oral history transcriptions:
Thanks Bob. But tht doesn't have individual results.

I've always found it frustrating how difficult it is to get race results online in a standard format - to make it easier to aggregate and analyze. Sites like athlinks.com seem to have the right idea, but the results are incomplete or incorrect.
Doing some side projects I've found the major marathons have AWFUL sites for getting the complete listing of results. Most are designed to list maybe the top 50 and then on an individual search basis. As for the Boston results, sorry I can't help you there. I have 2001-2010 in .csv format, but that's all baa.org offers.
Wow. According to that Joan Benoit was 477th when she ran her 2:35:15. If I counted right, this year even with the ideal conditions she would have been been around 147th with the same time.
I would imagine most smaller local races results pre-computer/internet are lost to prosperity, unless they took the effort and published them in some type of yearbook/annual.But for the Boston Marathon, one would think the results are printed somewhere. Even if it is a newspaper, surely it can be scanned.Gonna try to get the Boston Globe microfilm on an interlibrary loan. Will report back in the next few days.
